Super exciting! I was accepted into the UVA engineering department for FALL 2012. My sister and her husband met there. They both obtained Phds in Chemistry. They are doing very well. I am a transfer student from Central Virginia Community college in the engineering program. I have a 3.9 GPA.
Unfortunately I doubt I will be attending. I live in Lynchburg and own a house here with my lady. I would have to commute 3 hours a day to go there. The time isn't that bad(I would miss my wife) but the amount of money that will cost is just too high(I did the math.) I am an older student just turning 33. I worked in retail for over ten years and decided I had enough. I went back to school and did better than I anticipated. Actually, it was quite a shock that UVA was a possibility for me.
I will be attending the distance campus ODU has in Lynchburg. First year there is completely free. I am debt free at this moment except for my house and it's a great feeling. I plan to take a small subsided loan to cover some living costs as I am going to put a hold on work for a year so I can work on school and coding projects. I will be in a very small amount of debt after college and that is exciting. Plus I actually like the ODU class setup.
Also in my defense I am going into a field that is very skill based.
Where I can flat out show exactly why someone should hire me. I believe
in other majors where you go matters a lot more than computer science. Of course it be easier if I had a degree from UVA, but well returning to college at 31 kind of tossed away the easy route!
To younger folk I would say take the debt and go to UVA. Myself I am just excited that I will have a college degree! There is always grad school for me!
